Diagnostic guide scope and safety

Published · Reviewed and updated

Short answer: These pages explain diagnostic concepts. They do not replace the manufacturer procedure for your vehicle or establish that it is safe to drive. Test the reported condition and verify the cause before replacing parts.

Vehicle-specific procedures control the test

Definitions, wiring, enabling conditions and numerical limits can vary by model, engine and software. Use applicable manufacturer information and properly rated equipment. Do not improvise pressure, electrical or lifting procedures from an illustration.

Graphs and repair costs

Graphs are illustrative unless explicitly identified as measured data. They are not universal pass/fail thresholds or component-failure probabilities. Cost ranges and labor examples are planning information, not quotes or measured repair averages.

Driving and fuel-system precautions

A fault code alone cannot establish driving safety. Strong fuel odor, visible fuel, repeated stalling, severe rough running or a flashing warning light can require stopping and obtaining assistance. Keep ignition sources away from fuel vapor and never mouth-test vapor components.
